Crohn's disease: diagnosis comes from a gastroenterologist

What is Crohn's disease? Also known as regional enteritis, Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory disease of the digestive tract that primarily affects the small and large intestine, but can also affect other parts of the digestive system. This autoimmune disease causes the immune system to attack its own tissues, leading to inflammatory changes and a range of troublesome symptoms.

If you have been diagnosed with Crohn's disease and are looking for targeted treatment, our ATODA Medical clinic is ready to help. Although the diagnosis is often made by a gastroenterologist, patients with this disease can benefit from our world-class multidisciplinary care, including treatment by a rheumatologist. Our dedicated teams of specialists work closely together to provide a comprehensive and individually tailored treatment plan.

Why choose ATODA Medical for the treatment of Crohn's disease?

We use modern diagnostic and therapeutic procedures aimed at minimizing symptoms and supporting a full life with Crohn's disease. Our physicians take a comprehensive approach to treatment, taking into account the patient's overall condition and the associated autoimmune aspects of the disease. Our goal is to make care as comfortable and effective as possible.

Crohn's disease: symptoms

Whether Crohn's disease is diagnosed in children or adults, it can manifest differently in each patient. The most common symptoms include:

  • Abdominal pain (especially in the right lower abdomen).
  • Chronic diarrhea (often with mucus or blood).
  • Weight loss
  • Loss of appetite
  • Temperatures and fevers
  • And other extra-intestinal manifestations of Crohn's disease, such as fatigue and general weakness.

Symptoms of Crohn's disease may get progressively worse or appear suddenly. In addition, Crohn's disease can lead to the formation of abscesses, fistulas or other complications in the digestive tract. For this reason, it is essential to see a doctor at the first sign of symptoms.

Crohn's disease in children: symptoms need to be addressed immediately

Do you suspect that your child has Crohn's disease? The symptoms are usually the same as in adults. Especially in children, untreated Crohn's disease can have serious consequences. If treatment for Crohn's disease is not started, the following complications can occur.

  • Malnutrition and vitamin and mineral deficiencies.
  • Intestinal obstruction (obstruction) due to narrowing by inflammation.
  • Fistulas: Abnormal connections between the intestine and other organs.
  • Abscesses: Infected cavities filled with pus.
  • Increased risk of colon cancer after a prolonged course of the disease.

It is therefore essential not to delay and to seek medical help at the first suspicion of Crohn's disease. Early examination can prevent serious health complications and allow appropriate treatment to be initiated in a timely manner.

Crohn's disease: symptoms and causes

If a patient does not experience any of the above symptoms but experiences joint and spinal pain, it is necessary to visit our Department of Rheumatology (Prague). Although the exact cause of Crohn's disease is not known, there are several factors that can promote its development:

  • Genetic predisposition: Crohn's disease often occurs in people with a family history.
  • Immune system: The problem tends to be an improper immune system response that mistakenly attacks healthy tissue in the digestive tract.
  • Lifestyle and diet: Stress, smoking and unhealthy eating habits can aggravate patients and trigger symptoms.
  • Infections: certain infections can be a "trigger" for the development of this autoimmune disease.

How is Crohn's disease treated?

Treatment is individually tailored to the needs of each patient. Typically, it includes the following:

  • Medication therapy: Anti-inflammatory drugs, corticosteroids, immunosuppressants and biological therapy.
  • Dietary measures: Changes in diet can help relieve symptoms.
  • Surgery: In some cases, it is necessary to remove damaged parts of the intestine.
  • Crohn's disease cannot be completely cured permanently, but it can be kept under control and the quality of life can be greatly improved, so it is very important to see a doctor as soon as possible.

The doctors at ATODA Medical work closely with nutritionists and physiotherapists to create an individual treatment plan that takes into account all aspects of the patient's health. If you have been diagnosed with Crohn's disease, diet is just one of the few things our doctors can help you with. They will address not only dietary modifications with you, but also other lifestyle issues.
