Neurological EMG examination (Prague)

Electromyography (EMG) is an examination method used to diagnose diseases of motoneurons, peripheral nerves, neuromuscular transmission and muscles. No special preparation is needed before the examination. However, it is not advisable to apply cream to the skin of the extremities.

It may be a nerve conduction study (conduction study), where the nerve is stimulated with an electrical impulse and the response (action potential) is sensed, most commonly with surface electrodes glued to the skin over the muscle or nerve in question. The subject feels the stimulating pulse as a weak electric kick.

Another type of examination is needle EMG (electromyography), which uses a needle electrode. This is plunged into the muscle under examination, from which the response (bioelectric potentials from the muscle) can be registered, and changes typical of muscle or peripheral nerve involvement can be assessed. Thin disposable needles are used for the examination.

The most common indications for EMG examinations are:

  • Mononeuropathy, i.e., involvement of a single nerve, e.g., carpal tunnel syndrome or ulnar nerve involvement,
  • polyneuropathy, involvement of multiple nerves of the upper and lower limbs (e.g. in diabetes mellitus or other causes),
  • nerve root involvement in the spinal canal (e.g. oppression by a herniated disc),
  • impairment of the motor neurons of the anterior horns of the spinal cord,
  • impairment of neuromuscular transmission (e.g. myasthenia gravis),
  • a group of hereditary or acquired muscle diseases.

You may have an EMG scan if you have symptoms such as impaired sensation in your extremities, impaired limb mobility, or to evaluate the impact of a herniated disc on the function of your nerves and muscles, or if you suspect myasthenia gravis or motoneuron disease. We also perform an ischemic test (EMG electrodes are glued to the thumb of the hand and the hand is pinched for 10 minutes, then the patient starts breathing quickly and deeply for a few minutes and the neuromuscular response is measured on the EMG machine). Do not hesitate to make an appointment at our neurology (Prague).

My only regret is that I didn't sign up for a membership years ago! From the very first meeting with my GP (which was 90 minutes and she was really listening, nothing felt rushed) I have had really positive encounters with all the doctors, nurses, and staff at Atoda. They really do their best to make you feel comfortable and cared for. They take a holistic look at your health, the information is shared between doctors, and you can choose to see a specialist within the clinic or get a referral to another doctor where you insurance would cover so it's very flexible to your needs and budget. Most of all it just took all the stress out of visiting doctors and turned it into a pleasant and caring experience. Highly recommend.
