What is a ganglion?

A ganglion cyst is a fluid-filled sac under the skin. It is a benign formation that occurs near joints or tendons. Its content is typically a gel-like substance that can create protrusions under the skin. The cause of the formation of these structures is unknown. However, trauma (including chronic mechanical irritation) contributes to the development of ganglia, and for example, gymnastic activity is among the risk factors.

Not sure if you should start treatment for a ganglion? Send a photo or come in for an examination right away. Our team of the best doctors will provide you with the best possible healthcare.

The most common location for a ganglion is on the hand (on the wrist and finger)

Ganglia most frequently occur on the back of the wrist, followed by the front of the wrist. Of course, cysts can also occur in other parts of the body. Where are findings particularly common?

  • Ganglia on the hand (wrist ganglion, finger ganglion, elbow ganglion).
  • Ganglion on the foot (specifically ankle ganglion and foot ganglion).

Preventing the formation of ganglia is difficult due to the fact that their causes are not clearly known. Monitoring changes in the size, pain, or shape of the ganglion is crucial for the early detection of possible complications. A specialized dermatological consultation should be sought out, especially in the event of sudden changes in the area of the finding. Contact us immediately, especially if it is a painful ganglion.

Ganglion: treatment and the need for regular check-ups

The diagnosis of a ganglion usually involves a physical examination and is confirmed by ultrasound or an MRI. Most ganglia do not cause significant problems and can be treated with conservative methods, such as non-invasive procedures or pressure reduction. In the case of a painful ganglion or one that raises aesthetic concerns, painless surgical removal is advisable.

There are three treatment options:

  • Wait and observe: up to 50% of ganglia are absorbed on their own, but this process may take up to 10 years.
  • Aspiration: this is a very simple way to remove the contents of the cyst. However, the sac is often refilled.
  • Surgical intervention (ganglion surgery): this involves complete removal of the sac along with its neck. This procedure is characterized by absolute effectiveness, as it ensures the complete removal of the ganglion, including its neck. The procedure provides an immediate effect, and the patient feels relief and the release of pressure on surrounding structures almost immediately after surgery. Thanks to local anesthesia, the procedure is associated with minimal discomfort for the patient, and this method is also gentle on the surrounding anatomical tissue structures. Not only is it a procedure that minimizes aesthetic consequences, but the patient can also return to normal life without restrictions immediately after surgery, thanks to rapid recovery.
