Lipoma removal: When and why is Surgical treatment appropriate?

Lipoma is a subcutaneous benign fatty tumor that is often multiple. These fatty lumps, or fatty growths, can grow unnoticed for up to several years and then show up as a visible lump on the skin. The skin itself remains unchanged.

Even though lipomas are mostly harmless and rarely turn into malignant tumours (carcinomas), excision of a fatty lump is advisable, especially when it causes discomfort to the patient. It may be for aesthetic reasons, or the lipoma may be causing uncomfortable pressure in its surroundings.

Surgical removal of lipoma: The procedure and Recovery

At ATODA Medical, we remove lipomas painlessly under local anesthesia. Even for larger lipomas, outpatient removal is possible, and we then adapt the anaesthesia to the size of the tumour: we combine local anaesthesia with intravenous or inhalation anaesthesia to make the procedure as comfortable as possible.

In surgery, removal of lipoma is considered a standard procedure where the lumps are removed along with the surrounding tissue. After lipoma removal, the patient can expect a very short recovery. The recovery period varies depending on the size and location of the removed lipoma. A fatty lump on the testicle takes a different amount of time to heal than a fatty lump on the back.

Fat lump: Where can you find it?

Lipoma is more commonly known to people as a fatty lump. You may have already found some on different parts of your body in the past. In men, lumps often appear on the testicles and scrotum, in women on the breast.

But it's not unusual for anyone to feel a lump under the skin in the armpit, but also on the buttocks or abdomen, and less common are findings on the heels. On the face, for example, it can be on the eyelid, near the eye, on the chin or under the eyes. Such lipomas are usually soft to the touch, mobile and tend not to cause pain.
