Nail Fungus and Under the Nail Fungus (Symptoms, Triggers)

Nail fungus on hands and feet, also known as nail mycosis or onychomycosis, is an infectious disease. Nail fungus can cause not only aesthetic problems but also health complications, especially if not diagnosed and treated in time.

Fungal infection of the nail on the foot or hand (on the thumb and other fingers) can be characterized by various symptoms. Common changes include nail discoloration (often to yellow or brown), thickening of the nails, brittleness, or even nails separating from the nail bed. White or yellow spots may appear under the nail, which is another sign of infection. Surprisingly, nail fungus can also affect gel nails and be found under artificial nails.

The infection usually occurs due to contact with dermatophyte fungi, molds, or yeasts. These microorganisms are commonly present in the environment and can also spread from infected nails to healthy nails.

If you notice any suspicious symptoms of nail fungus, do not hesitate to schedule a consultation with our dermatologist. You can make an appointment at a specific time without waiting periods. Call us today to ensure quality care for your nails. Your health is our priority.

Nail Mycosis (Treatment)

How to cure nail fungus? First of all, it is necessary to consult with a dermatologist.

The treatment of nail fungus can be challenging and usually takes a longer time. There are prescription medications for nail fungus, often antimycotic drugs in the form of ointments, gels, or oral medications, depending on the severity of the infection and the individual needs of the patient. In some cases, another preparation, such as drops or cream, may be used, and in more severe infections or if the nails are damaged, surgical intervention may be necessary.

Nail fungus on the foot or hand is not just one type. There are several types, including:

  • Distal subungual onychomycosis (affecting the nail from its end),
  • Lateral onychomycosis (affecting the sides of the nails),
  • Proximal subungual onychomycosis (affecting the nail from its base).

Untreated Advanced Nail Fungus on the Feet

Untreated nail fungus can lead to permanent nail damage, such as nail loss, nail deformation, or even spreading the infection to other nails. In extreme cases, it can lead to an infection spreading to the surrounding skin, causing pain, swelling, and other complications.

It is important to seek medical help for any symptoms. A doctor can make a diagnosis and suggest appropriate treatment to prevent the spread of the infection, avoid skin fungus on the body, and minimize the risk of complications.
