Urethral calibration is a short, outpatient procedure that is designed to diagnose and treat urethral strictures. The procedure is usually painless and takes 10-15 minutes.

A narrowed urethra can cause various problems such as:

  • Difficulty urinating
  • Causing recurrent inflammation of the lower urinary tract
  • Weak urine stream
  • Frequent urination
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Pain when urinating

How does the procedure work?
It is performed in the supine position, after disinfection of the urethra and application of numbing gel. A thin calibration probe is inserted into the urethra and gradually dilated to widen the narrowed portion.

After the procedure, it is common to experience mild burning and irritation of the urethra, which subsides within a few days.
