Prostate examination: prevention that can save lives

The prostate is a small gland about the size of a walnut that plays an important role in the male reproductive system. Although men often don't like to talk about it, regular prostate exams can detect serious diseases early and significantly increase the chances of successful treatment.

Discuss prostate exam options with our urologist or english-speaking general practitioner for adults. At the ATODA Medical clinic in Prague, we offer a sensitive, discreet, and professional approach. The advantage of our clinic is comprehensive healthcare in one place, provided in a historic Art Nouveau building with excellent accessibility by car and public transport.

Why is prostate examination important?

The risk of prostate problems increases with age. The most common diagnoses are:

  • enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia),
  • prostate inflammation,
  • prostate carcinoma (cancer).

Many men put off getting checked because of fear or embarrassment. However, the truth is that early prostate examination is quick, gentle, and can prevent complications, including the need for prostate surgery. If you are unsure whether your symptoms are serious, it is always better to make an appointment with a urologist for a prostate check-up and be sure.

Prostate symptoms in men that you should not ignore

Do not underestimate even mild discomfort, as prostate symptoms in men are often subtle at first. The most common prostate symptoms in men include:

  • frequent urination, especially at night,
  • weak or interrupted urine flow,
  • feeling of incomplete emptying,
  • pain or burning during urination,
  • pain in the lower abdomen or perineum,
  • blood in the urine or ejaculate.

The above may indicate an enlarged prostate, inflammation, or even a more serious disease. Typical symptoms of an enlarged prostate include impaired urination and pressure in the pelvic area. An enlarged prostate is a common problem in men over the age of 50, but it can also occur earlier.

Chronic prostatitis: symptoms

If the problems persist, it may be chronic prostatitis. Symptoms include:

  • long-term pain in the pelvic area,
  • pressure in the rectum,
  • pain during ejaculation,
  • repeated urinary tract infections,
  • fatigue and discomfort when sitting.

This condition is also known as prostatitis. Its causes can be bacterial or non-bacterial. Many men first read various discussions on the internet and look for the experiences of others instead of consulting a specialist.

Remember that if you suffer from prostatitis, treatment at ATODA Medica is based on accurate diagnosis and can significantly improve your quality of life.

Prostate cancer symptoms: the silent enemy

Prostate cancer is treacherous. Symptoms often do not appear at all in the early stages. That is why prevention is key. Be especially alert if the following symptoms appear:

  • difficulty urinating,
  • blood in the urine,
  • back or bone pain,
  • unexplained weight loss.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men. In some cases, it can have a slow, long-term course (this condition is referred to as chronic prostate cancer).  The tumor progresses slowly and can be monitored over the long term or treated conservatively.

Treatment of prostate cancer without the need for extensive prostate surgery is possible, especially when detected early.

Don't underestimate your health and visit us

Many men search for the causes of their problems on the internet, reading discussions and looking for the experiences of others. However, nothing can replace a professional prostate examination. Early diagnosis can mean the difference between simple treatment and complex solutions for advanced disease.

At ATODA Medical in Prague, we emphasize prevention, discretion, and an individual approach. If you are unsure about your symptoms or want to make sure everything is okay, make an appointment for a prostate check-up today.

How is a prostate exam performed?

Unfortunately, checking your prostate at home (or self-examining your prostate) is not very reliable. If you have any doubts, contact our urologist, who will perform a professional prostate exam.

A prostate exam is quick and usually painless. It typically includes:

  • A discussion about your symptoms and family history
  • A physical examination of the prostate through the rectum
  • A prostate blood test (PSA test)
  • If necessary, an ultrasound or other imaging methods

Our clinic employs both general practitioners for adults and a specialized urologist, ensuring comprehensive and continuous care.

Prostate treatment: modern and gentle methods

Prostate treatment depends on the specific diagnosis. If an enlarged prostate is diagnosed, there are modern treatments for enlarged prostate that may include:

  • drug therapy,
  • minimally invasive procedures,
  • surgical solutions in advanced cases.

An enlarged prostate does not automatically mean prostate surgery. Modern procedures are gentle and allow for a quick return to normal life. If you suffer from prostatitis, treatment often involves long-term cooperation with your doctor. So when is the right time to see a doctor for a check-up?

When should you come in for a prostate exam?

We recommend:

  • preventive prostate exams starting at age 50 (earlier if there is a family history of the disease),
  • regular monitoring of PSA levels,
  • if you experience prostate symptoms (as mentioned above), it is advisable to see a doctor as soon as possible.

You can make an appointment without a referral, or through your general practitioner, who will refer you to a urologist for a specialized prostate examination.
