Psoriatic arthritis as a consequence of psoriasis - what is it?

Psoriatic arthritis (Latin arthritis psoriatica) is an inflammatory joint disease that often occurs in patients with psoriasis or psoriasis. Psoriasis in children and adults can take different forms and degrees of severity and requires specialist care. If not treated in time, it can lead to permanent joint damage and serious complications.

At ATODA Medical , we emphasize a comprehensive approach to treating psoriasis. Our team of experts will carry out a rheumatological examination, work with the department of dermatology (Prague) and physiotherapists who will prepare a treatment to meet your individual needs. We offer modern diagnostic methods, advanced therapeutic procedures and a personal approach to each patient. Our facility provides professional care focused on overall health and the prevention of further complications.

Psoriatic arthritis: symptoms most commonly manifest as follows

Are you suffering from psoriatic arthritis? Symptoms vary from individual to individual. The disease is manifested by pain and swelling of the joints, which may be accompanied by redness and a feeling of heat. Joint stiffness is also typical, especially in the morning, accompanied by limited mobility.

  • Pain and swelling of the fingers and toes (so-called 'sausage-like' appearance of the fingers).
  • Pain in the spine, especially in the lower back (psoriatic arthritis of the spine) - axial form.
  • Redness and swelling in the heel area. Enthesitis - inflammatory affection of the tendon attachment or ligament to the bone, especially in the heel area

When can you develop psoriatic rheumatism?

There are several triggers for psoriatic arthritis.

  • Genetic predispositions: If you have a family history of psoriasis or arthritis, the likelihood of developing it increases.
  • Immune system: A disorder of the immune system in which the body attacks its own cells contributes to the development of inflammation.
  • Stress: Long-term stress can increase the risk of developing psoriatic arthritis and can worsen symptoms.
  • Infections: Some infections can trigger the transition from cutaneous psoriasis to psoriatic arthritis.

.

Psoriatic arthritis: treatment

Treatment involves different approaches that are aimed at managing symptoms and preventing further damage to the joints:

  • Medical treatment: Non-steroidal antirheumatic drugs, corticosteroids and biological therapy are used.
  • Physiotherapy: Helps improve mobility and reduce pain.
  • Surgical treatment: In severe cases, surgery may be necessary to relieve symptoms and improve joint function.

Untreated psoriatic arthritis can lead to permanent joint damage, deformities and impaired mobility. In addition to physical limitations, the disease may also be associated with psychological problems such as anxiety or depression. Early treatment is essential to prevent these serious consequences.

Why is psoriasis treatment so important?

At ATODA, we emphasize a comprehensive approach to the treatment of various forms of psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis. Within our medical facility, we focus on diseases such as:

  • Psoriatic Arthropathy (a treatment that involves an individualized approach to therapy aimed at relieving pain and joint inflammation).
  • In addition, we provide expert care for specific forms such as Inverse Psoriasis (treatment focuses on gentle care of sensitive areas of the body).
  • We also treat rarer and more severe forms such as erythrodermic psoriasis, where early and targeted therapy is key.

Why go to the doctor for an examination? Our experts will help you choose the most appropriate treatments to suit your body's needs and the type of disease. Early diagnosis is key, as treatment can effectively relieve symptoms and stop the progression of the disease. Your doctor can recommend the right treatments, including physiotherapy and medication, to help you maintain your quality of life.

Types of psoriatic arthritis

Psoriatic arthritis affects the joints and connective tissues, most commonly in the fingers and toes, but also in the knees, ankles, spine or shoulders. In severe cases, the entire spinal axis can be affected.

There is not just one psoriasis; moreover, treatment of each type requires a specific approach.

  1. Symmetrical arthritis: Affects joints on both sides of the body, similar to rheumatoid arthritis.
  2. Asymmetric arthritis: sometimes called the joint form of psoriasis, it is characteristic of psoriatic arthritis.
  3. Distal interphalangeal arthritis: Affects the joints at the tips of the fingers and toes.
  4. Spondylitis: Causes inflammation of the spine and pain in the back.
  5. Arthritis mutilans: A rare but serious type of disease that can lead to deformities and loss of joint function.
