Thyroid gland testing (Prague): comprehensive diagnostics and care

A thyroid examination is an essential first step when a hormonal imbalance is suspected, as it can affect the entire body. The thyroid gland produces important hormones that regulate metabolism, growth, energy levels, and mental well-being.

At ATODA Medical, we provide comprehensive care, ranging from diagnosis to long-term treatment of thyroid conditions in both children and adult patients. Examinations are conducted gently, using modern methods, and with an emphasis on an individualized approach.

If you are dealing with issues in a child, we will refer you to our pediatric endocrinology department. For adult patients, our adult endocrinology department (Prague) is also available.

When to Take Notice: Thyroid Symptoms

Thyroid disorders often present with subtle symptoms and can be mistaken for ordinary fatigue or stress. Do you think you might have a thyroid problem? The most common symptoms include:

  • fatigue, sluggishness, or, conversely, restlessness
  • unexplained weight changes
  • difficulty concentrating
  • hair loss
  • heart palpitations
  • menstrual cycle irregularities
  • slowed growth in children

These symptoms may be related to a hormonal imbalance (such as hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism). If you are unsure, our general practitioner or pediatrician in Prague will recommend the next steps and refer you directly to a specialized department.

How a Thyroid Examination Is Conducted

Many patients ask how a thyroid examination is conducted. At ATODA Medical, the process is comprehensive, yet gentle and quick.

It primarily includes:

  • taking a medical history and assessing symptoms
  • a physical examination of the neck
  • laboratory testing of blood hormones
  • an ultrasound examination (sonogram)

A very important part of the process is the thyroid ultrasound, which can detect, for example, nodules on the thyroid gland, changes in size, or a suspicious nodule or tumor. If you suspect a thyroid disorder, schedule a thyroid examination in Prague as soon as possible. Early diagnosis significantly increases the success of treatment.

Reduced thyroid function and untreated hypothyroidism

Hypothyroidism is one of the most common hormonal disorders. It involves insufficient hormone production, which slows down metabolism.

Typical symptoms include:

  • fatigue and drowsiness
  • sensitivity to cold
  • weight gain
  • dry skin
  • slowed growth in children

If these symptoms are not addressed, untreated hypothyroidism may develop, which can have serious health consequences. This is particularly true for children, as it affects growth and development. Long-term untreated hypothyroidism can also lead to further complications, which is why early diagnosis is crucial. Treatment usually involves hormone replacement therapy.

Overactive Thyroid (Hyperthyroidism)

Conversely, hyperthyroidism refers to excessive hormone production. The body is “racing,” and the metabolism becomes overloaded. Symptoms typically include:

  • nervousness and irritability
  • heart palpitations
  • weight loss
  • hand tremors
  • insomnia

This condition requires professional monitoring and treatment, which may include medication or other procedures.

Enlarged Thyroid Gland Treatment

Treatment for an enlarged thyroid gland depends on the cause. Enlargement (goiter) may be associated with a hormonal imbalance, but also with the presence of nodules on the thyroid gland. These nodules are often benign, but they must be monitored. In some cases, the following may be recommended:

  • regular check-ups
  • medication
  • or, if necessary, thyroid surgery, which is considered in the following cases:
  • significant enlargement of the gland
  • suspected tumor
  • confirmed thyroid cancer
  • ineffectiveness of conservative treatment

After surgery, the patient is monitored long-term and often takes hormone replacement therapy.

Autoimmune Diseases and Thyroid Inflammation

A large proportion of these conditions are classified as autoimmune thyroid diseases, in which the immune system attacks the body’s own tissue. These include, for example:

  • Hashimoto’s thyroiditis
  • Graves’ disease

Thyroid inflammation is also common; it can be acute or chronic, and these conditions require long-term monitoring and properly tailored treatment.

Thyroid Treatment in Children and Adults

Thyroid treatment in both children and adults is always tailored to the individual based on the type of condition and may include:

  • hormone replacement therapy
  • medications that affect hormone production
  • regular check-ups
  • lifestyle adjustments
