What is ulcerative colitis and why it occurs

Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the colon, which is called colitis ulcerosa in Latin. Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis fall into the category of so-called idiopathic bowel disease (IBD), which means that their exact causes are not fully understood. Ulcerative colitis in both children and adults is a chronic inflammation of the superficial layers (mucosa) of the colon, which always affects the rectum and usually also different lengths of the colon and can lead to very painful symptoms. This is especially the case when the diet prescribed by the doctor is not strictly followed.

Ulcerative colitis: symptoms

Ulcerative colitis manifests itself with a variety of symptoms that vary depending on the severity and extent of the inflammation. The most common symptoms include:

  • Abdominal pain and abdominal cramps.
  • Chronic diarrhea, often with mucus or blood.
  • Incomplete defecation after a visit to the toilet.
  • Fatigue and reduced energy.
  • Nausea and loss of appetite.
  • Loss of weight.
  • In many cases, joint and back pain may also occur.

If you observe any of these symptoms, it is very important to seek medical attention. Without adequate treatment, ulcerative colitis can progress and lead to complications such as intestinal bleeding, dehydration or even the development of colon cancer.

What factors contribute to the development of ulcerative colitis?

Although the exact causes of ulcerative colitis are not fully understood, there are several factors that may contribute to its development:

  • Genetic factors: if someone in your family has ulcerative colitis or another bowel disease, your risk may be increased.
  • Immune system: An autoimmune reaction where the immune system mistakenly attacks cells in the digestive tract.
  • Environmental influences: Some studies suggest that stress, smoking or modern diet may be behind the disease.

Ulcerative colitis: treatment

Treatment of ulcerative colitis is complex and involves different approaches:

  • Medications to reduce inflammation: anti-inflammatory drugs such as corticosteroids or aminosalicylates help relieve symptoms.
  • Immunosuppressive therapy: drugs that help to limit the immune response and keep the disease under control.
  • Biologic therapy: Modern treatments that target specific molecules of the immune system.
  • Surgical solutions: In some cases, it is necessary to remove damaged parts of the intestine.

Our doctors at ATODA Medical are among the leaders in their field. We will provide you with a personalized approach that includes both traditional treatments and biological therapy options, advise you on what to eat, and help you manage your symptoms and stabilize your condition in the long term.

Ulcerative colitis: cure will improve your quality of life

Untreated ulcerative colitis can lead to serious complications. In addition to constant pain and indigestion, there is a risk of intestinal obstruction, bleeding, dehydration and even colon cancer. Early detection and proper treatment can prevent the disease from worsening and improve quality of life. Therefore, do not hesitate to make an appointment with our doctors as soon as you notice the symptoms mentioned above. Do not delay seeing a specialist, as early diagnosis is the key to successful treatment.
