Untreated scoliosis of the spine in adults is dangerous

Scoliosis of the spine is a condition characterized by abnormal lateral curvature of the spine. It is not just an aesthetic problem, but a condition that can significantly affect quality of life, breathing, internal organ function, and the musculoskeletal system. Scoliosis mainly affects the thoracic and lumbar spine. The curvature can be C-shaped or S-shaped, which affects posture and the function of the entire musculoskeletal system.

Early diagnosis and treatment are crucial. If scoliosis is left untreated, it can lead to serious consequences, such as:

  • chronic back pain and limited mobility,
  • impaired breathing and reduced lung capacity,
  • chest deformity and reduced heart function,
  • psychological difficulties associated with appearance and pain.
  • gradual worsening of the curvature,
  • disability.

Therefore, never wait and see a doctor at the first signs.

Scoliosis of the spine: symptoms, signs, and triggers

The first symptoms are often noticed when looking in the mirror, or scoliosis of the spine in children is detected during a preventive examination (pediatrics Prague). Typical manifestations include:

  • asymmetry of the shoulders, hips, or shoulder blades,
  • poor posture, such as leaning to one side,
  • protruding shoulder blade on one side,
  • back pain, especially after prolonged exertion,
  • in advanced cases, limited breathing or fatigue.

Scoliosis can arise from various causes. The most common are:

  • idiopathic scoliosis – arises without a clear cause (typically scoliosis in children and adolescents),
  • congenital scoliosis – caused by a developmental defect of the spine,
  • degenerative scoliosis – occurs in older age due to wear and tear of the discs and vertebrae,
  • injuries, inflammation, or neurological diseases.

Scoliosis of the spine: treatment at ATODA Medical

Remember that only a doctor can determine the exact diagnosis and degree of curvature. Each case is individual, and the correct procedure must be tailored to the patient. Remember that if you suffer from scoliosis of the spine, surgery can be delayed or completely ruled out thanks to timely treatment.

At ATODA Medical, we can promise you:

  • An individual approach and comprehensive examination,
  • modern rehabilitation and physiotherapy methods,
  • a team of experienced physiotherapy specialists (Prague), combining orthopedics and neurology,

Scoliosis of the spine: treatment

If you suffer from scoliosis of the spine, exercises can sometimes be a sufficient solution. In other cases, more radical treatment is necessary.

Treatment depends on the type and extent of the curvature. Options include:

  • Rehabilitation and physical therapy – targeted exercises for scoliosis of the spine, exercises to strengthen muscles and improve posture, determined by a child physiotherapy or physical therapist for adults
  • Orthopedic aids – braces for scoliosis in children and adolescents, belts for scoliosis
  • Treatment of scoliosis using physical therapy, medication, injections
  • Surgical treatment – surgery for scoliosis in severe cases or when conservative therapy fails.

Individual types of scoliosis

  • Idiopathic scoliosis (the most common form, affecting children and adolescents),
  • Congenital scoliosis (develops during fetal development),
  • Neuromuscular scoliosis (accompanies diseases such as muscular dystrophy or cerebral palsy),
  • Degenerative scoliosis (develops with age and wear and tear on the spine).

Other known distinctions include:

  • Sinistroconvex scoliosis – the curvature of the spine has a convex part (convexity) towards the left.
  • Dextroconvex scoliosis – the curvature of the spine has a convex part to the right.
  • Hyperkyphosis of the thoracic spine – this is not scoliosis, but an excessive backward curvature of the spine in the thoracic region, which can be combined with scoliosis and worsen posture and back pain.

Scoliosis in old age does not have to mean suffering

In seniors, scoliosis is often associated with osteoporosis and degenerative changes, which can be recognized by a general practitioner. Do you or your grandparents often discuss how painful scoliosis is? It manifests itself in enormous pain, limited walking, and deterioration of overall mobility. Early rehabilitation, appropriately prescribed exercises for scoliosis, and proper care can slow down the deterioration of the condition and significantly improve quality of life.
