Flattened head in babies or head predilection

Head asymmetry often manifests itself through the following symptoms:

  • Flattening of one part of the head (most often the occipital region)
  • The newborn's head appears slanted or irregular when viewed from above
  • Asymmetry of the ears (one ear is shifted more forward)
  • Facial asymmetry (e.g., one eye appears smaller, differences in the cheeks)
  • Head predilection or limited neck mobility (the child prefers one side)

Do not underestimate head asymmetry; address it immediately

Flat head syndrome is a condition in which the shape of the child's skull is uneven. It most often occurs in infants in the first months of life, when the skull is still soft and easily susceptible to pressure. Although it may seem like only an aesthetic problem, in some cases it can also affect the development of the child's musculoskeletal system and psychomotor development.

Do not underestimate your child's health. If you suspect head asymmetry, seek professional help for your child in a timely manner.

  • Call us and make an appointment for an examination.
  • Write to us and we will be happy to arrange an appointment with you.

What can be the trigger

  • Position factors – lying on the back for long periods of time, always sleeping with the head in the same position
  • Torticollis (wry neck) – the child has a shortened muscle and always holds their head to one side
  • Multiple pregnancy – limited space in the uterus
  • Premature birth – softer and more vulnerable skull
  • Lack of tummy time

Why go to ATODA Medical?

It is important to realize that only a specialist can accurately determine the type and extent of asymmetry. Sometimes the shape of a baby's head requires special treatment that cannot be replaced by home remedies. The sooner therapy begins, the better the result. Prevention should also be a fundamental pillar.

  • Our pediatrician works with all departments, and we have experienced specialists in child physiotherapy and rehabilitation.
  • We offer an individual approach and comprehensive care.
  • We use modern therapy methods, including the option of helmet therapy.
  • We work closely with our pediatricians and orthopedists.

Types of head asymmetry (brachycephaly or plagiocephaly)

A "flat head" or "squashed head" in babies are asymmetries that always affect the child's skull, most often the back and sides of the head. In some cases, it can also affect the face.

  • Plagiocephaly – slanted head, asymmetrical flattening usually on one side
  • Brachycephaly – symmetrical flattening of the entire back of the head, the head appears wide and short
  • Scapocelaly (dolichocephaly) – elongated head shape, common in premature babies

The cost of early diagnosis and treatment is incomparably lower than the possible lifelong consequences of untreated asymmetry.

Therapy and treatment of head asymmetry

Treatment of head asymmetry is most effective when started as early as possible. The basis is targeted positioning of the child, regular stimulation, and proper pediatric physiotherapy.

  • Positioning the child – it is important to alternate sides during sleep and play. It is also recommended to place the child on their stomach, which promotes head preference. This activity strengthens the neck and back muscles and helps to balance the one-sided strain on the neck.
  • Physiotherapy – special exercises for head preference help to relax and strengthen the neck muscles. A physiotherapist will teach you how to handle your child correctly during everyday care.
  • Home exercises – parents are often taught simple procedures (head preference exercises) that they can regularly incorporate into play and diaper changing.
  • Orthopedic helmets – in cases of more severe asymmetry, the doctor may recommend a special orthosis (for example, a helmet helps with plagiocephaly), which shapes the child's skull into a physiological shape.

It is crucial to start early and under professional guidance. Our physiotherapy in Prague ensures excellent results.

Possible consequences if left untreated

If head asymmetry is not addressed in time, the following may occur:

  • permanent cosmetic defects in the shape of the skull,
  • facial asymmetry (e.g., slanting of the eyes, ears, jaw),
  • problems with biting and chewing,
  • problems with the musculoskeletal system (poor posture),
  • in rare cases, impaired psychomotor development.

Therefore, it is important not to wait and to see a doctor at the first signs.

I couldn't have picked a nicer clinic. For me it's absolutely TOP. Such a nice and professional staff as in Atoda is hard to see. With my panic fear of needles, we found a way to overcome all the withdrawals during pregnancy ... gynecologist MUDr. Vlček is a pedant who does not underestimate anything! After my son was born, I signed him up for the atody as well. Regular check-ups at the exact time when I come and do not have to wait are not even remotely comparable to the meticulous approach of the pediatrician! The price/quality ratio is more than favorable! When I take into account that I have almost everything under one roof and I don't have to run halfway across Prague ... it's definitely worth it
