Pediatric Endocrinology and Diabetology (Prague)

Pediatric endocrinology and diabetology focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of hormonal disorders in children and adolescents. These conditions can affect a child’s growth, development, puberty, metabolism, and overall health.

Our pediatric endocrinology department provides the best comprehensive care focused on the early detection of hormonal disorders and a personalized approach to our youngest patients and their families. Examinations are conducted by an experienced pediatric endocrinologist who assesses not only the child’s current health status but also their growth and development, as well as family history.

New patients can schedule an appointment for an examination, even without a referral. For the convenience of parents, we also offer online scheduling. If you suspect hormonal issues in your child, please schedule an endocrinology examination for children in a timely manner.

Pediatric Endocrinology in Prague and when to visit

A consultation with a pediatric endocrinologist is particularly recommended when parents or a pediatrician notice abnormalities in a child’s growth, development, or metabolism.

The most common reasons for a visit include, for example:

  • significantly slow or, conversely, rapid growth
  • suspected puberty disorders
  • thyroid problems
  • excessive weight or, conversely, failure to thrive
  • hormonal issues affecting the body’s development

The pediatric endocrinology department at ATODA Medical also works closely with our other specialists, such as pediatricians, who may refer a child for a specialized examination.

What pediatric endocrinology covers

Our pediatric endocrinologist (Prague) primarily addresses thyroid disorders in children. In such cases, we diagnose conditions such as hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism, as well as an enlarged thyroid gland (goiter). This may also include an endocrinological examination of the thyroid gland, including a thyroid ultrasound if structural changes are suspected.

Pediatric endocrinology includes the diagnosis of diseases of other endocrine glands:

  • adrenal gland disorders
  • pituitary gland disorders
  • gonadal disorders

Pediatric Endocrinologist in Prague: How an Endocrinological Examination of Children Is Conducted

Every endocrinological examination of children is conducted on an individual basis and follows several steps:

  • detailed medical history
  • assessment of the child’s growth (auxology)
  • clinical physical examination
  • assessment of pubertal signs
  • ultrasound examination of the thyroid gland, if necessary

Based on the results, the pediatric diabetologist or pediatric endocrinologist may recommend further testing or treatment. If more extensive diagnostics or treatment are needed, we collaborate with other specialized centers.

The patient may be referred, for example, for dynamic hormone testing, comprehensive anthropometric evaluation, or growth hormone therapy. These same patients may also continue to be monitored in the field of adult endocrinology after reaching adulthood.

What conditions can the Department of Pediatric Diabetes and Endocrinology in Prague help with?

We specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of hormonal disorders. Pediatric diabetology in Prague is part of the broader field of endocrinology, which encompasses diseases of the endocrine glands and metabolic disorders.

What do we primarily monitor?

  1. Growth disorders
    • Short stature (height below the 3rd percentile, slowed growth velocity, or growth below parental prediction)
    • Tall stature (height above the 97th percentile, marked acceleration of growth, or growth above the parents’ genetic prediction)
  2. Puberty disorders, where we also address issues related to the onset of puberty.
    • Precocious puberty (onset of puberty in girls before age 8 and onset of puberty in boys before age 9)
    • Delayed onset of puberty (absence of signs of puberty in girls over 13 years of age, absence of signs of puberty in boys over 14 years of age, or a very prolonged course of puberty (longer than 5 years)).
    • For girls, we also address menstrual cycle disorders, such as primary or secondary amenorrhea.
  3. Obesity and metabolic disorders, with care including comprehensive obesity evaluations and counseling that cover diagnosing the causes of excess weight, establishing lifestyle interventions, and, if necessary, modern treatments (e.g., GLP-1 analogs)
  4. Failure to thrive and low weight (we also perform comprehensive evaluations for failure to thrive and low weight, where a child is not gaining weight or does not meet growth standards).
  5. We provide specialized nutritional counseling for families whose children follow a vegetarian or vegan diet or have other specific plant-based dietary needs. Our primary goal is to ensure the child’s proper growth and development while maintaining their chosen diet.

I go to Dr. Podstolska with my one-year-old daughter. I am very satisfied with her individual approach, willingness to solve even seemingly small things. Of course, she is professional and friendly at the same time. I'm also glad for the pleasant office with a play rug, heating over the changing table, the possibility to drive a stroller up to the office. The care of the nurses and their assistance during appointments is absolutely above and beyond. I also appreciate the texting system that reminds me of my check-up/exam appointment in a timely manner.
