Pilonidal sinus (cyst) - removal under local anesthesia

What is pilonidal sinus?

Pilonidal disease is actually a chronic infection in the natal cleft area between the buttocks.

At the bottom of the groove between the buttocks, channels and cavities are formed under the skin filled with hair and pus.

How does pilonidal sinusdevelop?

Many factors contribute to its development. The most significant are pressure and friction in the area, which lead to ingrown hairs under the skin. The probability of developing the disease is therefore greater with more pronounced pubic hair, a sedentary lifestyle, sports with strain on the area between the buttocks (horse riding, cycling, etc.). It most often appears at the age of 16-26.

What are the symptoms of pilonidal cyst?

  • Pain above the coccyx or at the top of the buttock gap that gets worse with prolonged sitting (e.g. after a long day at the office or school, after a long car ride)
  • Swelling or redness in the buttock area
  • An abscess (pus-filled cavity) will form If the infection is not treated, the abscess may open and  drain a mixture of blood and pus, sometimes this is the first sign you notice

How to treat pilonidal sinus?

Pilonidal disease rarely goes away without treatment. Most cases require some type of surgery.

How treatment is conducted at our clinic:

1) Initial examination and consultation (30 min)

We will evaluate the progress of the disease, whether the inflammation should be calmed down conservatively or whether it is already necessary to surgically drain the pus from the cavity (abscess incision).

We will schedule an appropriate time to remove all manifestations of pilonidal disease (complete surgical excision).

We will evaluate whether a complete excision is possible under local anesthesia or general anesthesia (we can immediately evaluate the extent sonographically)

2) Removal of pilonidal sinus and cyst under local anesthesia (90 min)

We want to enable our patients to undergo the procedure without the need for prolonged hospitalization and the need for general anesthesia in the pleasant environment of our modern operating room.

The procedure takes place with an emphasis on minimizing stress and pain both during the procedure itself and after it. Removal of the pilonidal sinus under local anesthesia has been shown to result in less postoperative pain.

We reduce the risk of disease recurrence by choosing modern surgical procedures and also by pre-operative ultrasound mapping right in the operating room.

You can listen to music or chat with us during the procedure.

We will anesthetize the area where we will operate with an injection of local anesthetic, but we will prepare you in advance by administering an anti-pain and anti-anxiety medicine. If the administration of the injection is difficult for you, it is possible to use short-term inhalation anesthesia with nitrous oxide (Entonox)

After the operation, the wound will be aesthetically closed with a non-absorbable suture.

In some cases, a drain (tube to drain fluids) will be inserted into the wound.

3) Follow-up to remove the drain (15 min)

If a drain was inserted, it will most often be removed the day after the procedure.

4) Follow-up to remove stitches (15 min)

Depending on the extent of the wound, the stitches will be removed 10-14 days after the procedure.

Laser epilation

Following the primary treatment of pilonidal sinus (cyst) with surgical methods, we offer laser epilation of the affected area at our clinic, as it has been proven that laser epilation reduces the risk of recurrence of pilonidal disease.

Pilonidal disease can be a very bothersome disease in addition to the intimate area.

Do not hesitate to consult us about your problem.

We are here to find the most pleasant solution as possible!

Atoda Medical is a private facility and its prices are identical to other facilities of this kind. However, we, the clients, have a bonus in the form of superior services and I stand by that!!! All the doctors, nurses but also the receptionists form a great team in my opinion and I always look forward to this clinic. And I am not a patient who likes everything:-) I have my demands, which I cannot say that they are not met. That's why I have renewed my registration again and probably will remain so in the future. I would like to thank Mrs. Karolína Hrubá, who gained my trust and helped me a lot in a situation I didn't know how to handle. She is a person in her place and a great professional. :-) Thank you also to everyone else .....

My only regret is that I didn't sign up for a membership years ago! From the very first meeting with my GP (which was 90 minutes and she was really listening, nothing felt rushed) I have had really positive encounters with all the doctors, nurses, and staff at Atoda. They really do their best to make you feel comfortable and cared for. They take a holistic look at your health, the information is shared between doctors, and you can choose to see a specialist within the clinic or get a referral to another doctor where you insurance would cover so it's very flexible to your needs and budget. Most of all it just took all the stress out of visiting doctors and turned it into a pleasant and caring experience. Highly recommend.
