Removal of the anal skin tag

Anal skin tags (duplications) are a common and benign skin problem. You may feel them as small bumps or raised areas on the anus formed by excess skin. It is common to have multiple skin tags at once.

How do skin tags manifest themselves and how to distinguish them from other problems in the anal area?

An anal skin tag is not a serious manifestation from the point of view of health, but it can be very annoying with itching, sometimes it can swell and hurt if the skin in the area rubs against clothing. Excess skin can make hygiene more difficult. As a rule, the skin bump does not bleed. Over time, its size can increase if there is mechanical trauma during cleaning, or if problems with hemorrhoids or anal fissures that originally caused this protrusion recur.

Anal skin tags versus hemorrhoids: How to tell the difference?

Hemorrhoids are dilated veins, they are painful, red to purple in color and bleed, in contrast, the skin protrusions are only minimally painful, do not bleed and their color is similar to the color of the skin around the anus

Anal skin tags versus anogenital warts: How to tell the difference?

Warts are the result of infection with the human papillomavirus (HPV). They can spread around the entire anus, cause a burning itching and bleed on contact, their surface is rough and has a cauliflower-like appearance, compared to them, the skin tags have a skin-like surface that is only slightly wrinkled.

If you are still not sure what your problem is, do not hesitate to discuss your problems with our specialist.

What causes anal skin tags?

The skin around the anus is often looser than the skin on other parts of the body because the anal area needs to be elastic enough. Skin tags are usually the remnants of hemorrhoids, anal fissures, or inflammations that have pulled this skin. The original problem has already disappeared, but the excess skin has already remained permanently.

The following conditions can provoke the formation of hemorrhoids, cracks and inflammation, and subsequently also skin protrusions:

straining due to constipation, diarrhea, heavy lifting, vigorous exercise (abdominal press), pregnancy, blood clots around the anus, excessive irritation or friction in the area, Crohn's disease

Examination at Atoda Medical:

Although it is a non-malignant affection of the anus, before removal a careful examination by a proctologist is necessary to distinguish other problems and possibly heal hemorrhoids or anal fissures, so that the wound healing after the removal of the skin protrusion takes place in an ideal way. The proctologist will discuss your general state of health with you, examine the area around the anus and perform an anoscopy - an examination of the inner part of the anus.

After the examination, the proctologist determines the strategy when the removal of the skin tag will be optimal - whether it is necessary to treat other diseases of the anus first.

Recommendations before the procedure to facilitate wound healing:

  • 2 days before the procedure, a no-residue diet and start taking probiotics
  • liquid diet on the day of the procedure
  • on the day of the procedure, in the morning, saline enema and emptying
  • on the day of the procedure, in the morning, the antibiotic prescribed by the doctor during the previous examination

How the skin tag is removed:

We always remove one tag even if there are more tags, the reason is good wound healing and more comfortable emptying after the procedure.

We remove the tag under local anesthesia injected directly into the site of the tag, we pay attention to the least painful application possible (with a thin needle), administration is also possible after previous general analgosedation administered intravenously or after inhalational analgesia with Entonox.

After disinfection and sterile dressing, the skin tag is surgically removed with a scalpel and the wound is sutured with an absorbable suture.

We will recommend the most suitable method of wound care.

We still recommend resting on the day of the procedure, it is possible to return to work from the second day, sports should be limited for the first 14 days.

We usually plan a follow-up examination 14 days after the procedure to evaluate wound healing.

Skin anal protrusion is a benign formation, but it can be very annoying. Don't be shy to come for a consultation, we will tailor a solution for you, and you will get rid of the inconvenience.
