Eyelid growth: symptoms and manifestations

A skin growth on the eyelid or a skin growth under the eye can manifest in different ways, depending on their type and location. Common manifestations include:

  • Visible lumps or protrusions around the eye or on the eyeball.
  • Feeling of a foreign thing in the eye.
  • Irritation or pain.
  • Impaired vision.
  • Redness and swelling of the eye.
  • Itching or burning of the eye area.

It's important not to underestimate these symptoms and visit our clinic, as some types of growths can indicate more serious conditions, while other times patients mistake them for complications such as barley grain or wolf grain.

What causes growths on the eyelids

Eyelid growths can be caused by a variety of triggers. The most common include:

  • UV radiation: prolonged exposure to sunlight can lead to the formation of growths on the surface of the eye.
  • Infection: Bacterial or viral infections can lead to growths, especially in the eyelid area.
  • Inflammation: Chronic inflammation of the conjunctiva and other parts of the eye increase the risk of growths.
  • Ageing: With age, changes occur in the tissues of the eye, which can lead to the formation of benign tumours or other growths.

Regular eye exams are crucial not only for identifying and treating eye growths, but also for monitoring the overall health of the eye. Many eye diseases show only minimal symptoms in the early stages, so it is important to undergo regular check-ups to prevent serious complications.

Removal of skin growths on the eyelids

Skin growths on the eyelid that interfere with vision or threaten malignancy are usually removed surgically.

Removal of skin growths, plastic surgery of the eyelids, or removal of other skin problems is done in our surgery suite. During surgery, we will make sure you are comfortable and receive the utmost care. Our state-of-the-art operating rooms ensure that the entire procedure goes smoothly. To help you feel relaxed, the staff will wrap you in a nice, warm blanket and offer you the opportunity to listen to music of your choice. If you wish, a loved one may also be present, which is especially beneficial for parents of children undergoing procedures related to eye problems.

What other eye problems do we address?

Our eye clinic in Prague treats all eye problems, even those confused with eye growths, because they can be located in the eyelids and eye area. What other eye problems can you contact us for?

  • Xanthelasmata (also xantelasmata) are yellowish deposits of cholesterol in the eyelid area, often caused by high blood cholesterol levels. They are usually benign and can be removed surgically if they present an aesthetic problem or interfere with eyelid movement.
  • Patients who are bothered by eyelid verrucae also frequently contact us. Verrucas are benign skin growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They can appear anywhere on the body, including the eyelids. Although benign, they can be uncomfortable and require treatment, especially if they grow, change colour or cause discomfort.
  • An eyelid cyst is a closed pocket filled with fluid or semi-liquid material. They can arise in various tissues of the body, including the eyelid area. For example, meibomian cysts (chalazion) form when the sebaceous glands in the eyelids become blocked.

Our specialists use modern diagnostic methods and effective treatment procedures to help you get rid of the problem and maintain healthy vision. With our comprehensive approach, you will have the confidence that your problem is being addressed by experts in their field.
