What is cystoscopy in women and men?

Cystoscopy is a diagnostic examination method that allows examination of the inner wall and cavity of the bladder and urethra. A flexible cystoscope is a thin flexible tube equipped with a light and a camera. This procedure is performed by doctors in urology or urogynecology.

Regular medical checkups and timely examination are the key to detecting and effectively treating many diseases. Examinations such as cystoscopy in urology allow doctors to accurately diagnose the problem and suggest appropriate treatment, thus avoiding serious health complications.

You should visit ATODA Medical especially if you experience any of these symptoms:

  • Pain or burning when urinating,
  • frequent urination, especially at night,
  • blood in the urine (haematuria),
  • feeling of incomplete bladder emptying,
  • pain in the lower abdomen or pelvic area, etc...

What does the examination look like?

Although the basic procedure is the same for both men and women, there is a fundamental difference in how a female cystoscopy is performed compared to a male cystoscopy due to anatomical differences between the sexes.

How is a bladder cystoscopy performed in a woman and a man

Bladder cystoscopy in a woman

It is usually easier and quicker because of the shorter and more direct urethra. After thoroughly cleaning the area around the urethra and applying a local anaesthetic, the doctor gently inserts the cystoscope into the urethra and then into the bladder.

During this process, the patient may feel a slight pressure or discomfort. Once the cystoscope is in place, the doctor will examine the bladder walls, which usually goes smoothly without major complications.

Cystoscopy of the bladder in a man

It is more complicated because of the longer and curved urethra. After thoroughly cleaning the area around the urethra and applying a local anaesthetic, the doctor gently inserts the cystoscope through the urethra into the bladder. This process may be less comfortable for men because the cystoscope must overcome the curvature of the urethra. During insertion, the patient may feel significant pressure or discomfort. Once the cystoscope is in the bladder, the doctor will examine the bladder walls in a similar way to women.

Wondering if cystoscopy is painful? In our experience, a cystoscopy for either a man or a woman is not painful and takes only a few minutes.

What can a cystoscopic examination reveal?

ATODA offers state-of-the-art care and modern medical technology. Our specialists have extensive experience in the diagnosis and treatment of bladder diseases. Outpatient cystoscopy is performed by us on a daily basis, so you have nothing to worry about. There are various bladder diseases, including:

  • Urinary tract infection (UTI),
  • bladder infections (cystitis),
  • the presence of urinary stones,
  • tumours or polyps in the bladder,
  • injuries or mechanical damage.

With our individual approach and emphasis on patient comfort, you can expect not only expert but also empathetic care.

When is a bladder wash performed?

Bladder lavage is performed during a cystoscopic examination. After a cystoscopy, both the man and the woman may feel a slight burning sensation when urinating and a small amount of blood may appear in the urine. These symptoms should subside quickly. It is advisable to drink plenty of fluids to flush the bladder and speed healing.

At ATODA Medical, we not only deal with cystoscopic examinations in urology, but also, for example, bladder catheterisation. If you are concerned about anything, please do not hesitate to contact us and we will do everything we can to help you.

So far we've had only good experiences with doctors at Atoda. The detmatologist was great and managed to treat a terrible infection and an endless eczema in our boy. The pediatrician is always very nice and a good listener, so is the GP and the gynegologist. All of them always caring and helpful when needed.

I go to Dr. Podstolska with my one-year-old daughter. I am very satisfied with her individual approach, willingness to solve even seemingly small things. Of course, she is professional and friendly at the same time. I'm also glad for the pleasant office with a play rug, heating over the changing table, the possibility to drive a stroller up to the office. The care of the nurses and their assistance during appointments is absolutely above and beyond. I also appreciate the texting system that reminds me of my check-up/exam appointment in a timely manner.
